“Touch her and die.” Is all I hear before Max is pulled from the truck and pushed up against the side, his face pressed against the window.

“Don’t hurt him,” I scream as I scramble out of the passenger seat and round the 4x4. “He was just giving me a ride home.”

“Yeah, I bet he was.” Sawyer’s jaw clenches, his eyes filled with rage like a fiery liquid ready to erupt.

I’m surprised he hasn’t burst a blood vessel with how angry he is.

“It’s true, man,” Max says, his face squashed against the window.

“Sawyer, let him go.” I tug on his arm, practically swinging on it, but the strength of this man is unyielding. “Please, Sawyer, just take me home.”

His eyes soften at my pleas, and he loosens his grip, stepping back from the truck. “If you’ve laid a finger on her, you’re a dead man.”

“I haven’t touched her, I swear it.” Max looks over at me. “Are you sure you want to go home with him?”

I nod. “I’ll be safe with him. He’s my uncle.”

Max doesn’t hang around for our family reunion, and jumps in his truck, starts the engine, and drives out of the car park.

Sawyer glares at me with a deadly gaze, a growl rumbling from the depths of his broad chest like a beast. “I’m not your fucking uncle and you’re far from safe with me, baby girl.” He grips my upper arm and leads me out of the car park, onto the path from where I came.

His tight grip on my arm aches, but my centre flutters that he’s here and showing more emotion than he has all day, even if it’s not the sort of attention I wanted from him, it’s attention at least.

“What the fuck do you think you’re doing?” he growls, stomping down the dirt road that leads to the lake and our cabin, dragging me by the arm as I canter to keep up.

“What are you doing? You avoid me all day, only to show up and drag me back home.”

“I didn’t know where you were. You weren’t answering your phone.” His grip tightens around my upper arm, pinching the flesh there.

“I came to the bar to take care of my problem.” I hiss the words with venom in my tone.

“What problem. If you have any problems, you should come to me.”

“I did, and you refused to solve it.”

He stops his long strides and turns back to face me. “What are you talking about?”

“I’m talking about you not wanting me because I’m not experienced enough for you. So I came here tonight to gain some experience. Maybe you’ll fuck me after I’ve done the rounds.”

His face pales under the moonlight. His hair turns white with the snow, but I’m sure I’ve caused him a few grey hairs from my statement alone.

“You let some fucker put their hands on you?” His face twists up into a snarl, as if he can taste the bitterness I feel.

“No.” My voice cracks. “Turns out I can’t even give it away.
